Using the Online Certification System-Profile Information

➤ How to I change my password?

You can always change your password by accessing "My Account" and going to "Settings" 

➤ I do not remember my username and/or password. What can I do?

If you need to recover your password, please use the automatic password recovery system. https://gnwt.in1touch.org/forgotPassword.html
If you cannot recover your username, please contact the Registrar. 

➤ Do I need to renew my password every so often?

You do not need to renew your password.  Although it is a best practice to change it on occasion.  Please do not share your password with anyone. 

➤ Do I need to keep my profile up to date (employer, contact information)?

Yes.  The registrar will be sending information to you and your employer based on the information held on file.  The Information needs to be up-to-date. 

➤ I have changed employers. How to I update this information in my profile?

If you have changed employers between certifications, please contact the Registrar’s office at teacherqualificationsupport@gov.nt.ca.

➤ I have changed legal names. How do I update this information in my profile?

If you have changed your legal name, please notify the Registrar by e-mail and provide proof of name change: teacherqualificationsupport@gov.nt.ca 

➤ How can I update my contact information?

If you have changed contact information between certifications, please contact the Registrar’s office at teacherqualificationsupport@gov.nt.ca.



Letter of Professional Standing

➤ What is a Letter of Professional Standing?

A Statement of Professional Standing is a document that states whether you are a teacher in good standing in a jurisdiction and if your teaching certificate has ever been revoked, cancelled, or suspended for any disciplinary reasons.

➤ Does requesting a Letter of Professional Standing from the NWT cost anything?

Requesting a Letter of Professional Standing from the NWT costs $ 30. This fee can be paid online by credit card or by cheque or money order payable to Government of Northwest Territories.

➤ How to I request a Letter of Professional Standing from the NWT?

To request a Letter of Professional Standing from the NWT please fill out the form located here. 

➤ How do I request a Letter of Professional Standing from a jurisdiction outside the NWT?

The following list states the contact information for all Canadian Registrars for requesting a letter of Professional Standing. 

➤ There is an error on my letter of Professional Standing issued by the NWT. What can I do?

If there is an error on your letter of Professional Standing issued by the NWT, please contact the Registrar’s office at teacherqualificationsupport@gov.nt.ca.

➤ I have requested a letter of Professional standing from the NWT. Will I receive it or will it be sent directly to the jurisdiction that requested it?

All Letters of Professional Standing issued from the NWT are sent directly to the jurisdiction you are applying to. An electronic copy will be sent to you via email.



Salary Evaluation Letter

➤ What is a salary evaluation letter?

A salary evaluation letter is an official letter issued by the Registrar’s office  that indicates the education and years of teaching experience recognized by the Registrar of Teaching Certification. This letter is sent to the human resources office of your employer to assist in correctly placing you on the pay scale. 

➤ How do I request a Salary Evaluation Letter?

If you are newly hired, you do not need to request a salary evaluation letter; one will be issued automatically when you apply for a NWT Teaching Certificate.
If you have completed additional education or have additional year of teaching experience you would like recognized, please fill out the Salary Evaluation Form on this website.  Please ensure that all necessary transcripts and proof of teaching experience if sent to the Registrar's Office

**Please note that your salary evaluation letter is effective from the day the registrar’s office receives your transcripts and not the day you completed your additional education.

➤ Does requesting a salary evaluation letter cost anything?

There is no cost associated with requesting a Salary Evaluation letter.

➤ Not all my teaching experience is present on my salary Evaluation Letter. Why is that?

According NWTTQS policy when determining acceptable years of teaching experience, the following guidelines are used:

    • There must have been a requirement for certification and the individual must have been in possession of a valid teaching certificate;
    • The curriculum of the educational institution must be recognized by a government agency; and
    • The JK-12 institution must have used some public funds or were eligible for public funds.
➤ I have requested a Salary evaluation letter. Will it be sent to me or directly to my employer?

In addition to be accessible on CertifiED NWT,  your requested salary evaluation letters will be sent to you by the registrar.  The registrar will also send a copy directly to your employer's human resource division.



NWT Teaching Certificates

➤ I received my Teacher certification in another Canadian jurisdiction, is that sufficient?

All teachers must hold a valid NWT teaching certificate in order to teach in the territory. Substitute teachers do not require a teaching certificate. 

➤ Do I need a teaching certificate to teach in the NWT?

Yes, all teachers must hold a valid NWT teaching certificate in order to teach in the territory.  Substitute teachers do not require a teaching certificate. 

➤ How much does it cost to be certified in the NWT?

The cost for applying for a new certificate, whether interim or professional, is $ 85. Once a certificate is granted, there is a renewal cost of $30 every 2 years for interim certificates and 5 years of professional certificates. 

➤ How can I pay for my certificate?

Certificate fees can be paid  online by credit card or by cheque or money order payable to Government of Northwest Territories.

➤ When does my teaching certificate expire?

All NWT interim teaching certificates expire after 2 years, whereas NWT professional certificates expire after 5 years.

➤ What types of teaching certificates are issued by the Northwest Territories?
The Registrar of Teacher Certification currently issues the following interim (2-year) teaching certificates:
  • Interim Indigenous Language Specialty Teaching Certificate
  • Interim Professional Teaching Certificate
  • Interim Junior Kindergarten Specialty Teaching Certificate
  • Interim Vocational Specialty Teaching Certificate
The Registrar of Teacher Certification currently issues the following professional (5-year) teaching certificates:
  • Indigenous Language Specialty Teaching Certificate
  • Professional Teaching Certificate
  • Junior Kindergarten Teaching Certificate
  • Vocational Specialty Teaching Certificate
➤ What are the requirements for an Interim Indigenous Language Specialty Teaching Certificate?

The Registrar of Teacher Certification may issue an "Interim Indigenous Specialty Language Teaching Certificate" to a person who:

        • is fluent in an Indigenous language;
        • is recommended by the Superintendent; and
        • has, in the opinion of the Superintendent, successfully completed one academic year of work experience in a classroom, or successfully completed a 25 hour teacher training program.
➤ What are the requirements for an Indigenous Language Specialty Teaching Certificate?

The Registrar of Teacher Certification may issue an "Indigenous Language Specialty Teaching Certificate" to a person who:

        • holds a valid NWT "Interim Indigenous Language Specialty Teaching Certificate"; and
        • has, in the opinion of the Superintendent, successfully completed two school years of teaching in NWT.
➤ What are the requirements for an Interim Professional Teaching Certificate?

The Registrar of Teacher Certification may issue an "Interim Professional Teaching Certificate" to a person who:

        • holds a teaching certificate that, in the opinion of the Registrar, is the equivalent teaching certificate from a province or territory; and

        • has obtained a bachelor of education degree approved by the Registrar or holds a post-secondary degree, other than a degree in education, from a university and has successfully completed one year of course work in a Faculty of Education at a university, both of which are approved by the Registrar;
➤ What are the requirements for a Professional Teaching Certificate?

The Registrar of Teacher Certification may issue a "Professional Teaching Certificate" to a person who:

        • holds a valid NWT "Interim Professional Teaching Certificate"; and
        • has, in the opinion of the Superintendent, successfully completed two school years of teaching in NWT.
➤ What are the requirements for an Interim Junior Kindergarten Specialty Teaching Certificate?

The Registrar of Teacher Certification may issue an "Interim Junior Kindergarten Specialty Teaching Certificate" to a person who:

        • has successfully completed a two year program in early childhood education from an educational institution approved by the Registrar.
➤ What are the requirements for a Junior Kindergarten Specialty Teaching Certificate?

The Registrar of Teacher Certification may issue a "Junior Kindergarten Specialty Teaching Certificate" to a person who:

        • holds a valid NWT "Interim Junior Kindergarten Specialty Teaching Certificate"; and
        • has, in the opinion of the Superintendent, successfully completed two school years of teaching in NWT.
➤ What are the requirements for an Interim Vocational Specialty Teaching Certificate?

The Registrar of Teacher Certification may issue an "Interim Vocational Specialty Teaching Certificate" to a person who:

        • has a journeyperson certificate from the Northwest Territories or a province or territory for the vocation which they wish to teach;
        • satisfies the Registrar that they have successfully completed two years of work experience after obtaining the journeyperson certificate; and
        • has, in the opinion of the Superintendent, successfully completed a 25 hour teacher training program.
➤ What are the requirements for a Vocational Specialty Teaching Certificate?

The Registrar of Teacher Certification may issue a "Vocational Specialty Teaching Certificate" to a person who:

        • holds a valid NWT "Interim Vocational Specialty Teaching Certificate"; and
        • has, in the opinion of the Superintendent, successfully completed two school years of teaching in NWT.


Application for NWT Teaching Certificates

 ➤  I made a mistake and have already submitted the application. How can I correct it?

Please contact the Registrar’s office at teacherqualificationsupport@gov.nt.ca.  Changes can be made to your application from the Registrar's office. 

➤ How do I know that my application is complete?

You will receive an email notification updating you on the arrival of any third party documents, receipt of payment and completion of your request. Please ensure that the e-mail address on file is correct. 

➤ Can I send my Transcripts directly to the NWT Registrar of Teacher Certification?

Transcripts (including e-transcripts) must be sent directly from the educational institution you attended.

➤ Can I apply for more than one teaching certificate?

If you meet the requirements of each certificate, you can apply for more than one teaching certificate.

➤ Do I have to hold an NWT Interim Teaching certificate before I can hold a Professional Teaching Certificate?

You need to hold a NWT Interim certificate before applying for the matching NWT Professional Teaching Certificate.  

➤ Do I need to resubmit all my transcripts when applying for a new type of teaching certificate?

Your transcripts and any documents submitted are added to your electronic file and do not need to be resubmitted when applying for a new teaching certificate or for a renewal. 

➤ When will my certification issued?

You should receive your teacher certification 20 business days after your application is complete (i.e. after all third party documents have been received by the Registrar of Teaching Certification).

➤ What kind of criminal verification is accepted?

A criminal verification that includes a Vulnerable Sector Check that is no older than 90 days from the day the registrar’s office receives it is acceptable. This criminal verification can be issued by your local police department or the RCMP. 

➤ I have a criminal offense record. Will that impact the issuance of my certificate?

Not necessarily. This will depend on the kind of offense and when the offense was committed.

➤ Where do I have sent my official transcript(s) and other certification documents?

Please have sent any third party documents (including but not limited to transcripts and statements of Professional Standing) to:

➤ Are photocopies or internet printouts of transcripts acceptable?

Photocopies or internet printouts of transcripts are not accepted.  Transcripts need to be sent to the Registrar directly from the educational institution.

➤ I recently completed my bachelors of education. Can you process my application if my degree is not yet on my transcript?

No, you will need to request a letter from your institution stating that you have met all requirements for your degree.

➤ I earned my degree in another country. What do I send to the NWT Registrar of Teacher Certification when I apply for a certificate?

A WES evaluation report determining your degree equivalency to a Canadian degree.

➤ Do you accept e-transcripts from a college/University?

Yes, e-transcripts are accepted. 

➤ I currently hold conditions on my teaching certificate from another jurisdiction. Are those conditions still needed for NWT certification?

No, NWT does not have conditional certificates.

➤ I have many years of teaching experience, why do I need to start with an Interim certificate?

As per NWT Regulations.

➤ Which universities are recognized as valid institutions?

For evaluation purposes, only education completed at a recognized (member of UNIVCAN) institution will count towards your salary evaluation. Please find recognize institutions list https://www.univcan.ca/universities/member-universities/

➤ Does the statement of experience need to follow a specific format?

There is a form that needs to be filled by the former employer.

➤ Does an email from a past employer suffice as a statement of past experience?

No. Employers must fill in the appropriate form. 

➤ I want to cancel my application. How can I do that?

To cancel your application please contact the Registrar’s office at the following e-mail: teacherqualificationsupport@gov.nt.ca

➤ If I cancel my certificate before the expiry date, do I get my money back?

Once the certification is issued, there are no refunds. 


Renewals of NWT Teaching Certificates

➤ If I no longer work as a teacher in the NWT can I still renew my certificate?

Yes, as long as you meet the requirements of the teaching certificate you hold.

➤ My certification has expired; can I still apply for a renewal?

Yes you can still renew your teaching certificate past the expiry date at no additional cost. 

➤ Do I need to resubmit all my transcripts when renewing a certificate?

No, unless your certificate has lapsed for more than 5 years.

➤ When will my renewal be issued?

Your renewal will be issued within 20 business days from the day your application is complete.

➤ I have a Standard Teaching Certificate. Can I renew it?

Yes a Standard teaching certificate can be renewed. 

I have an interim certificate that will be expiring soon. Can I renew my Interim teaching certificate?

Yes, you can renew your interim teaching certificate if you do not yet meet the requirements for a professional teaching certificate. 

➤ Do I need to perform additional course work to renew my certificate?

Currently additional course work is not required to renew your certificate. 


Current NWT Certificate Holders

➤ I have changed legal names. How can I get a certificate with my current legal name?

Please send legal proof of your name change and a new card will be issued.

➤ If I send documents after I submit my application, will they be placed in my file?

Yes all documents you send will be placed in your electronic file. 

➤ If I disagree with the assessment from the NWT Registrar of Teacher Certification, what can I do?

You will need to send a formal appeal letter to the registrar within 90 days from the day you receive your salary letter.

➤ Can I download a copy of my certification card/salary evaluation letter?

Yes, your certification card and salary evaluation letter are available for download on the system.  You will also receive a hard copy of your certification card by mail. 

➤ How can I show proof that I am certified in the NWT?

Your NWT issued Teacher certification card serves as proof that you have been certified in the NWT. 

➤ I have lost my NWT Teacher certification card. How do I request for a duplicate copy of the certificate?

Please contact the Registrar’s office at teacherqualificationsupport@gov.nt.ca to request a new certification card.
